Hi Guys! Basically, i spend 60 quid in pets at home on a gerbilarium, ledges, chew blocks and willow sticks etc. Basically, i would like to create my own little toys for my gerbils (and hamster) for free! As i am a full time student, seeking a job, i cannot afford paying for toys, thus, i wanna keep my wee babies entertained and happy, for free lol. Any ideas guys? Any input would be appreciated ;D. I give them cardboard tubes etc, but would like to give them more elaborate toys =] Thanks Guys Lisa

I make a lot of wooden huts for them. I replace them every 3 weeks as they start to stink but they are cheap!

I adapted an idea i found on a rat forum and thought i would take pics at each stage for you 1) find bits of cardboard and tubes, i used flaps from a box and xmas wrapping paper tubes 2) Cut peices to the size you want 3) draw around the base of the tube on the cardboard where you want it to attach 4) cut out the hole 5) put together however you want This will be going in my tank next cleaning day and sorry for the rubbit 'how to' it's my first one

I give my gerbils wodden stir sticks for coffee. You can get bags of 150 stir sticks at the dollar store for really cheap. I put a couple in their tank each day, and they chew on them quite happily. I also buy unscented willow balls at home outfitters (I think people make floral arrangements with them or something). You get 8 in a bag for about 10 dollars- not free, but cheaper than a pet store toy. They destroy one in a few minutes, but it is a favourite.

Depends on the size of your tank but if you have room.. I stack 1-3 cereal boxes (or 1-2 eater egg boxes) on top of each other at one end of the tank, cut a small hole in the top and two at the side thats not against the tank.. fill it with wood shavings etc so you haven't got that horrible sound ofnails scratching against cardboard and hey presto hidey house with multiple levels, doors and a great look out post! Not bad for free.. I don't worry about the ink as never had a prob with it and apparently its ok if its food packaging. Attachments:

Also if you're lucky enough to work somewhere that uses things that come on large or thick cardboard tubes these are great.. I don't now but I used to and the thick tube in the photo (at the front) lasted months! Great for my old gerbil Alfie's teeth! Pringle tubes with both ends removed are good too but don't last long. Also the "tower" in the middle is out of a cardboard box to seperate bottles of liquids.. made a great little castle and look out post again depends where you work, or where your friends work!
