Are egg cartons OK for gerbil? I've seen alot of people using them. I was wondering if anyone in the usa or ohio had used them, as maybe others are using a different type. The styraphome type is what we have. Is that OK?

You cant use the styraphone type, you mean the stuff like the meat trays? Thats er...darn polystyrine sorta plastic isnt it?
If you have the recycled cardboard ones they tend to be quite safe (ive used them) but i would check as im in the uk.

The actual material is fine (and wonderful) but I don't use them because as any human should know- raw eggs can cause salmanilla... and it can do the same for small animals. I just stick with cardboard... and those drink holders at fast food places... oh, those are great!

These were going in the trash when a neighbor got a new stereo. They're made of the same recycle cardboard that egg cartons are made of, and just barely fit inside a 10 gallon tank....... Where others see trash...I see Gerbil Castles!

You can microwave paper egg cartons, but I don't bother with them as I have so many other cardboard items which are safe. Cardboard drink carriers (with four holes for cups) are a great substitute for egg cartons and my gerbils love chewing them!

We don't get the cardboard ones very often. Too bad though, cause I'm starting to run out of cardboard things for them. I've already asked friends and family to save their paper towel tubes and their empty tp rolls.

I lucked out I suppose. I do house cleaning, so the other girls (and the boss) and I keep the rolls I get like 8 cardboard rolls a week! I don't eat enough eggs to bother with the cartons either.

I was wondering about the super thick cardboard tubes used in construction for concrete - I couldn't tell for sure if they were 'treated' at all, but they would be an awesome addition to any tank. Of course, they are at least 8" across... ;D
