Ahhh! if it is the ammonia theory, that seems to make the most sense. Just about the mice. Males do smell but I found keeping them on carefresh helped a lot. Female mice barely smell. And as for hamsters dwarfs tend to not smell as much as syrians do. omg syrians are really smelly! haha but not as smelly as mice. I can't believe that anything that small be so smelly?! claudettebillie - if she cleans it every 3-4 days, that's actually pretty often, which might explain why they aren't that smelly Your opinion, can you put these in the order of the smelliest to non-smelliest? (its not in any particular order right now) -gerbil -rats -mice -syrian hamster -dwarf hamster -robo hamster -chinchilla -rabbits -ferret -guinea pig -jird I guess if you're not sure you can list down what you think they are in the order. In order mice ferrets rabbits Guinea pigs rats Syrian hamster robo hamster dwarf hamster jirds gerbils chinchillas I think chinchillas smell the least, and believe me, we've got 18 of them and they don't smell one bit

If your animals are cleaned or spot cleaned regularly they should not be that horrible smelling.

Really? rats don't smell that bad huh? hm... I guess they just have a bad reputation. I've always assumed that they were smelly.
I'd love to own a rat, guinea pig, rabbit, or chinchilla someday, but I don't have the space. hehe

In my opinion, from smelliest to least smelly:
- ferrets - mice - rabbits - cavies - rats - Syrian hamsters - winter white dwarf hamsters - Campbell's dwarf hamsters - Chinese hamsters - gerbils - Roborovski dwarf hamsters - chinchillas
Never seen a jird, so I can't say anything for those.
As for cleaning, my rabbits and cavies get cleaned 2-3 times a week since they smell fastest. Mice could probably get cleaned twice a week but usually only get cleaned once a week. Rats get cleaned once a week, same with sugar gliders. All of the hamsters and gerbs get cleaned every two weeks, though ideally the Syrians could probably be cleaned every 1.5 weeks.
