They're in a 20gallon tank, with 12inches of bedding. I have a wooden house in one of the corners of the tank and they always burrow under it. At first, their tunnels were great but over time, they collapsed because the shelter was too heavy. There are plenty of other spots to make their burrows, does anyone know why they always insist on tunneling right there? Any suggestions on websites where I can get the answer?

Gerbils like to dig under things such as wood and rocks, but looking from your setup they have planty of those to chose from. I should imagine that they are burrowing in the same spot as that is where their scent is, after you clean the tank you will find that they are likely to start in a different location.

Hey Kiblams! I've re-done my setup. Don't know if you've seen it yet. Its strange why they only burrow under objects. Wouldn't it be better if they burrowed under nothing so there isn't any weight above the burrow?

Gerbils are little angels that are always there for us... we just need to be there for them too. :)

I use boxes and tubes for the same effect, though you have to rebuild it all on cleaning them as they demolish the boxes you put down there in time. It's cheaper using boxes too

Ladyangel: It's nice but it isn't a natural gerbil burrow which they built themselves.
