I take this to be bruxing. Means they are happy. Mine do this when they come up on my shoulder

really? cause my gerbil was biting my belt and i tried to pull her off gently and when i did she grinded her teeth

She probably bit off a bit of the belt fabric and was chewing on it.

Mine sometimes grind their teeth too. Its funny when sometimes they're chewing but you know they aren't eating anything coz it looks like theyre talking to themselves hehe

my little Evie does this as well, I always thought it meant she wanted to chew more since she tries to chew EVERYTHING. She also doesn't make any (apart from my own post about a squeak) noises so the reply about bruxing and its tie to this chattering is interesting.

I've seen my gerbils do it as a form of aggression. When introducing Nessie to Skye, Nessie would lunge at the divider and grind her teeth. During the beginning of my split cage with Skye and Skittles, Skye was lunging at the divider and grinding her teeth. It's pretty obvious in this case that it wasn't a sign of contentment. So I guess it depends on the context.
