Ive read a lot of info that says gerbils are not nocturnal, like hamsters are...but mine seem to be. They sleep in their little house most of the day, and then at about 5 pm or so, they come out and eat, and dig, and play...is this normal? They are about 7 weeks old.

They are most active at dawn and dusk. 5pm is about dusk here.

They are not nocturnal. They get up several times during the day and during the night. At 7 weeks, mine slept a lot more than they do now at 6 months.
But, now I am use to my boys sleep cycles. Mine are typically up for an hour or so at 3 a.m., 7 a.m., noon, 4 p.m., and midnight. Of course, the amount of playing they do can affect these times. And, each gerbil will be different.

Gerbils are crepuscular-- meaning most active during twilight (dusk and dawn)-- which would account for why your little guy is out primarily at 5pm or so. It also depends I think on the gerbil's individual habits. I find Evie is most active around 10pm-12am, then again around 2pm or so. I should keep track to see but this is when I often catch her about or when she's hanging out with me lol
