waxworms are a mess, I used to feed them and mealworms to my finches.
even if you know the source, e coli is just a fact of life with mealworms, that is why we no longer take chances on them with our birds.

Yes but birds are alot different to gerbils, plus feeding them at a tiny amount you arent having a huge risk for Ecoli etc.

e coli is still e coli, freeze dried is the only safe option since it kills off the e coli.

My little boys enjoy a little bit of chicken. Ghengis in particular. Just a little snippet of plain baked chicken.

Paul was right when he said that crickets will bite baby gerbils. I once worked at a pet shop. The guy in charge of our reptile room (NOT me!) once put a baby (pinkie) mouse and a bunch of large crickets together in the cage of a large lizard. The lizard ignored his lunch, but the crickets started attacking the baby mouse and began to eat him alive. *Shudder* I snatched that baby mouse out of there so fast. ... no animal should have to suffer like that.
I'm so sorry I'm telling you all this horrible story. I'm only mentioning it because I wouldn't want the same fate to befall some of your gerbil pups. I would NEVER NEVER NEVER put crickets or locusts in the same cage as gerbil pups. However, I'm sure adult gerbils would love to have the bugs to munch on.
I don't even remember what I did with the baby mouse afterward. It happened a long time ago. (Probably 15 years ago or so....) I don't remember whether I was able to return the baby to his mother or not.

Like someone said above, my gerbils love an occasional treat of dried cat food! and our cats don't mind because they only eat a couple of pieces.

It sounds as if the concern is the crickets would be eaten and if the gerbil had the pups the crickets might bite the pups.
Anytime live food is fed there is a risk of transmitting disease to the gerbils, so as long as the crickets are verified to be eaten I would say the risk is no more or no less.

A few years ago when we had a previous batch of gerbils a large fly got into their tank and started buzzing around. One of our sleeping gerbils opened an eye and jumped up snatching the fly from the air and gobbled it down. Never seen the little blighter move so fast and we had never tried live food with them.

This thread is really helpful! I'm trying to find out some good protein ideas.
My pair don't really enjoy egg, so I was thinking about giving them a bit of dog or cat food. I want to avoid live insects because Juliet may very well be pregnant.

I'm a vegetarain myself and I can't stand meat. I'd rather give Trixie a small piece of cheese every few weeks.
