Toilet paper rolls aren't that abundant in my house, so I've been giving my gerbils different kinds of cardboard as much as I can. I've been using cereal boxes, soda can boxes, small boxes from fiber bars, and so on. I rip off all of the parts that have glue on them, and I make sure that there's no food or anything on the boxes before I give it to them. It seems to be safe, but I just want to make sure?

Yeah, I've always given these things to my gerbils and never had any problems. As long as it's clean and not wax coated. Egg-box style recycled cardboard packaging is good too. Most cardboard packaging is fine, I give mine cereal boxes, tea-bag boxes, tissue boxes, etc, any food packaging outer box. Mine also have a bamboo tunnel chew thing from a petshop just in case of a cardboard shortage. And hay, they gnaw on hay to keep their teeth down too.

Mine get all types of cardboard except anything that's had medication in. If the box has come out of the freezer I leave it overnight to dry out and then give them it.

Hiya! You can give your gerbils pretty much any type of cardboard, except for card that has come in direct contact with food, and wax coated boxes, you will feel the waxy surface on them don't worry . You can also give egg boxes, but give them a wizz in the microwave to kill off anything that might be on there, plus the gerbils LOVE warm egg boxes, (well mine do !) x

you're more then welcome! Also TP rolls are a HUGE hit with the gerbs! Grab a couple, stuff them with tp roll and some treats in the middle, and they go bazzo ripping them apart ! x
