We are now on day 9 of pregnancy and day 22 since I started the split cage! They've been together for as long as they were in the split cage! The newly weds are still doing splendid. Sleeping together, making nests, destroying cardboard (together, they can destroy an entire kleenex box in a little over 24 hours), grooming each other sleeping in each others nests, and trying to steal food from each other. ;D I'm having to be a lot more careful with Penelope now, as she's a crazy one. She goes absolutely nuts if I'm in the vicinity and I don't put my hand in for her to hop on so she can go for an adventure. She just love to explore the outside world. I can put my arm laying across the tank and she will climb all the way up my arm and onto my hand beside the top of the tank! Then, she climbs up my shirt and onto my shoulder and runs amidst my hair, trying to make my split ends even worse. This is cute and great and all, but I'm so scared she'll fall, and a fall is something we certainly don't want with her being pregnant and all. Also, she doesn't eat. Like ever. She doesn't enjoy eating. All my otehr gerbils I've ever had, turn into litlte monsters when you offer them a treat! Penelope? She squints her eyes at it and then glares at it and runs away. i've tried everything. All kinds of nuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, dried papaya, dried bananas, etc, still nothing. Then, greedy little Sebastian comes over after penelope decides she doesn't want it, and then he gobbles it up. I try to explain that she needs the protein that's in the treats for the pups and he certainly doesn't need any extra protein, but he doesn't listen. Oh well. Pregnant women will be pregnant women. BUT! I did find that she likes scrambled eggs! And while she didn't eat very many of the pieces I offered her, at least she did take it which is phenomenal. So excited to meet the pups! My family and I are having a "competition" to see who guesses the closet to how many pups there will be and when they'll be born. My guess is the 18th & 6 pups. Anyone else care to guess? ?

Is she really happy with Sebastian? It sounds as if she may had been upset? This is only a guess as I have never bread gerbils. But I hope she will be ok. Any pups would be great if all healthy and Squeeky I would say

oh yes, she's very happy with him. She's always loved to explore out of her tank ever since I got her. it's just her personality. But she's definitely fallen for Sebastian She loves to groom and be groomed by him, and loves to cuddle up close to him. Even when i take her out, and she gets put back in, the first thing she does is run over to Sebastian for a grooming session.

not sure... That'd be a good thing to look into. I'll have to search on that. Course, she's always been a picky eater as well.. She just needs to realize that she can't afford to be picky, she has extra mouths to feed Then again, maybe I'm just used to little piggies, and NORMAL gerbils don't eat as much as my crazy boys have eaten in the past. She does eat, just not as much as everyone else. lol

Scrambled egg will be great for her, full of protein for her pups. My Mary is like that with food, she shows no interest in treats at all apart from peas. I guess the 20th and 5 pups

Good news! This past Sunday night through Tuesday night I was out of town with a friend (one last escape before the babies) and my family stayed and watched the gerbils. Well, until sunday, Penelope had the eating habits I describe in my last update. Well, since I've been back I've noticed her eating has gone way up. She takes any treat I offer her and is LOVING the scrambled egg. yay! Just thought I'd let yall know also... I know they say you can't tell when a female is pregnant by looking at her until right before her birth, but is that necessarily true? Penelope does seem a tad bit "fuller" but I could just be going crazy. lol Also, what did you gerbils act like when they were pregnant?

I don't know if this was just my gerbil, but when Misty was pregnant when she was with Ash, around the 14 or 15 day in, she seemed a tad bit "fuller" (as you put it) and every few days (2-3) she would seem slightly larger in that area, and this continued until the day of the birth (2 healthy pups, and the runt who died only a few hours later). As I said before, I don't know if its just my gerb, or even just that one pregnancy- I'll find out in two weeks, since she's found a new husband with the name of Comet, and is expecting as of 6:32 PM last night.
My guess is 6 pups on the 19th; good luck!

Update: P.S. & Company are all doing well. Penelope has been getting more rest as of late, and has taken a liking to makings nests (before she never was keen on making nests) and has become more of a homebody. Sebastian is doing a great job with holding up the fort and putting things where they need to go. He's forever walking around with pieces of bedding in his mouth! I know it's getting close and I am getting excited, as I keep having dreams of little gerbil babies! Of course.... I've had dreams of waking up and finding gerbil babies for several years, but that's ebsides the point. lol Tomorrow, she will have been pregnant for two full weeks, and should be starting her last full week of pregnancy. Not tomorrow but the next tuesday, will be 21 days, so I expect them any time after that! Also, since I have put the two together, they have both become much happier gerbils. When I bought Sebastian, he was a lone gerbil (all his siblings had been purchased) and so he's been all by his lonesome self for quite some time. He is now a much happier gerbil now e's found his gerbil soul mate *HUMOR TIME* We have also made an important decision regarding the pups... Penelope, Sebastian, and I all talked this through for quite some time and have decided... that we are going to have an ALL NATURAL birth. It is a big leap of faith, we know, but we feel it is best for the pups. We are searching for a gerbil doula and gerbil midwife as of right now, and are also trying to find a gerbil sized bath tub. I think we are going to do an at-home birth instead of going to a hospital or birthing center as well. I know, it may sound crazy, but like I said, we've done our research and think it best. And, Sebastian supports Penelope 100% on her decision! Anyone with any experience, tips, or recommendations for natural gerbil birth, we'd greatly apprciate te help. Also, we reallyneed a stongly reommended gerbil mdwife! Thanks everyone for understanding this monumental decision. It means so much. :')

OH YES! Time to put in an ad. If anyone is in the Dallas Fort Worth area (or if you don't mind travelling there) any time between mid October-Christmas time, I will have baby gerbils ready at that time. I will be registering very soon with the AGS (actually, hopefully today) and will start a website. Just let me know if you're interested, and I will jot down your username and send out more info on the pups as I get it. Also, I currently do not have anyone in line for first pick of the litters, so act now.
