I just got my first gerbil, Dex, on Sunday, and I will put my hand in the cage for her to sniff and she will give me gentle little nips on my fingertips. She doesn't do it as much anymore, and I think it was just her way of saying "Hello, you are new, let me get used to you!"

Do you feed treats to your gerbils through the wires? Cause if you do, thats probably why you got bit.

I was bit by one of my gerbils a few months ago, and I didnt think anything of it. So i continued talking until my hand felt wet. HOLY SMOKES! It bled soooo much for such a tiny cut! It hurt so bad but I didnt realize it was bleeding like that! OUCH OUCH OUCH! Babies sometime nibble my fingers when they are young, just testing to see what is what

I've been bitten twice by Dixie until I bled. Dunno what's going on there. Just letting them sniff my hand and she decides to come take a bite.

I'm a little bit confusing with my 2 boys, Coco and Bobo. I bought them at my local pet shop so perhaps they didn't have much human handling. I'm still on the progress of taming them and think things are going up. Coco is very energetic, stays awake for a long time and always busy doing something. Bobo on the contrary is shier. He likes making nest and hides in it. But they both come when I offer treats and sometimes climb on my hand. However if I make my hand a fist and put in the tank, they react differently from each other. Coco will sniff it, then nibble or lick it. And he realizes it's not food, so he goes away. Or if the nibbling is a bit strong I'll move my hand away, he'll sniff again then go. Bobo ALWAYS bites my hand. Not very hard though. The first bite is like a nibble, very light, but it's not like Coco's nibbling. I can feel Bobo's teeth plug into my hand while with Coco they are sliding. If I still lay my hand there then the second bite would be a real bite, harder and stronger. It hurt a bit, but not painful, and never bleed. No wound or little hole either. But yesterday Bobo bit me and when I tried to take my hand out, I also lifted him up the ground. I mean like he was attached to my finger, he did let go after some seconds; and like usual, the bite wasn't painful or bleed. I just wonder if Bobo is just playing a bit rough or he thinks my hand is food? And should I let him "play" with my hand again? If I should then how to teach him to behave better?

good question, on of my gerbil does the same sometimes... I always thought it was because my gerbil thought my hand was a treat because thats where treats come from hmmm, interesting! Cant wait to haer what people say!
