Of course I wasn't telling her to throw two unfamiliar gerbils together, I would never do that. Relax, no need to jump down my throat

How's the old man getting on? I hope he is okay. have you made any decisions yet about keeping him alone or doing a split?

You have had different advices for your 5 year old, and it is your choice to decide. But I thought I add, bare in mind that all gerbils have Individual personalities. My old-ish male I introd to 2 pups via split cage, which went fine. But it did not work out at the end. But I noticed how miserable, depressed and stressed my lone male was in the split and I just could not take it anymore, left him alone and I am convinced he lives still as he is happy, with tons of attention from me. So the decision is in your hands, you know your pal best, what he could put up with and what not

I agree with the other posts -- you have to judge by your gerb's personality. I have 2 girls and 1 boy; used to have 2 boys, but one sadly passed on soon after I got him and I never really bothered to go through with split-cages and intros because I know he likes being on his own. He's super fat and super meticulous about his cage -- I mix pine and Ecobedding and he makes a giant hill of Ecobedding on one side and a flat patch of pine where his house is. So cute. :3 They were littermates too.
