Michael, most newspaper is made with organic ink now.
Only lead based paints are toxic. you'll be supervising the gerbils in there, so you cans see if they're chewing something bad.
The tape is fine. Duct tape and clear tape are the only ones that shouldn't be used.

Oh jeez I didn't even see that people had posted on here! Yes, it's all safe, gerbils should always be supervised when in the playground (as it says in the instructions). For example, you wouldn't let your gerbils have a plastic house in their tank, because the plastic can be ingested and cause internal problems, but it's fine to use a plastic house in a playpen because they're under supervision Thank you ohmylokix for answering that! ;D

Very nice and all a great creation but is all of this stuff truely safe. it for 1 has newspaper (ink!!!) and paint paint but im realy worried about the tape you used could you assure me its safe so i can build 1 cuase it lokks awsome. newspapers are recycled, the ink is non-toxic, the paint is non-toxic (if u read), they won't get to the tape!!!

Gerbils can EASILY blear 1.5 feet. My old girl, Toshiya, used to jump two feet into the air and land on me head!
In the long run, they CAN chew out of the box,a nd it will become ruined from their urine nd feces and become unlivable.

lol there is no way they can chew through 5/8 wood and of course it has a top Don't challenge them! lol As a side-note, I noticed that gerbils can generally chew through anything given an edge to start with and enough time. I've seen two very thick wooden things (a tunnel and a house) that have enormous holes that used to be small, lol.

You use PVA non-toxic childrens glue the sort Nurseries and, Schools use, to stick the sand on and, you make it for a separate tank so it can stay in the tank then, move the Gerbils over, for a regular play each day.
