My 3 year old Frosty has started scratching his ear, making it bleed. I noticed his brother has been grooming him there specifically for the past couple of days but it's only this morning that I saw the blood coming from his ear. Any ideas what might be wrong? I don't think his brother is causing it, I think he's actually cleaning the blood off Frosty after he's made it bleed by scratching it. Are mites or something possible? Where would they have come from? I'm taking him to the vets tomorrow but until then it's just so distressing seeing him scratching and bleeding, is there anything I can do. Or just wait until the vets? Just wanted some advice in case I can make him more comfortable now and also so I'm more informed when I go to the vets. Please help?!

I have had 2 gerbils that have scratched and made there ears bleed, on Was Farrow she went to the vet last week and the vet said she was fine just a buld up of wax.
The other is Dusty, he had many problems with his ear he has many infection plus Polips (small tumors). In the end it was a condination of these that made me have him PTS as he lost all balance.
Get your vet to have a good look in the ears.
If it just a simple infection AB's should all be needed, if it is Polips sadly there not much that can be done. Thankfuly these tumor are rarely cancerous.
Good luck at the vets

Well the vet had a good look and saw a little sore patch/ulcer in there. So I've got antibiotic cream to put in his ear twice a day (interesting challenge!). The only thing is he is still scratching and making it bleed, so probably not allowing it to heal anyway. Any tips on how to stop him scratching?? Mini head collar? )

i find qtips are best to treat gerbil issues but even that can be hard to get on certain gerbils. I would suggest Manuka honey on his sore spot as well as it may help with the itch and healing.
Take care, Tammy

If you found the blood in your gerbil ear then treat them better and if possible to take him with the animal doctor. Because in such kind of situation people do not have any idea about how to treat your gerbil better one.

Anyara - did this all clear up ok? If so what treatment did you use in the end?
I think my gerbil has a similar thing so just wondering what it was that actually worked...
