Hi, I recently got a gerbil (and I know gerbils shouldn't be kept alone, I hope to introduce her to my other gerbil...) but the thing is, she was kept in a cage with two other male gerbils and a female (all from different litters). They have all lived in the same cage for two months now, and neither of the female gerbils have gotten pregnant. They are now 3-4 months old, possibly a little bit older. My question is, how likely is it that the gerbil I got is pregnant? She sleeps a lot, eats a lot, and drinks a lot, but her stomach doesn't seem bigger than usual. Are there any other signs I should watch for that appear early on in pregnancy? Any answers would be appreciated. If my gerbil is pregnant, then NO that is not a problem. I would just like to have a better idea of the chances that she is pregnant. I also gave her a cardboard tea box as a little house and she built a nest in it. Then she made another one in the same tea box. She also is a little frisky being held and nips a little - when she first came home she didn't, but now that she's more comfortable she sometimes nibbles/nips. Not enough to break the skin though. I read that pregnant gerbils don't like being held as much... could that be what this is? Thanks to all who reply!

well there is a good chance she is pregers and i assume you were ready for pups when you took her with you knowing she was in with males,,glad you dont seam to worried. how long have you had her? gerbils can be hard for new gerbil/preg gerbil owners to spot, but she wont realy "show" till about 3-5 days before birth the best thing you can do is give her lots of food and water never let her run out of water. and yes gerbil moms to be can get a bit moody and nippy when they are preg but not all of them.

Thanks for answering. Yes, I am fine with pups and thought about that before getting her, so it's not a problem. I've had her for 4 days now and I'll make sure she has fresh food and water everyday! Anyone else have any other thoughts?

Wait and see. You might begin to notice a few days before she gives birth if she is pregnant, but you might not. An owner with a lot of experience can sometimes tell earlier, but even they might see no signs until pups show up.
If she hasn't given birth after you've had her a month, then she isn't likely to.

Alright, thanks... I don't have a lot of experience with gerbils, but I do have three others (owned them for a year).
The one thing I did notice is that she drinks a noticeable amount more of water than my other gerbils - however, she doesn't eat fruits, unlike them. So could this be why?

Just like people, some gerbils require more water & they also have different tastes for food. Like Matt said, 30 days from the time you got her... If she hasn't had pups by then, then you're safe. 35 days if you wish to be overly cautious.

Okay, thanks I'll try posting some pics so maybe people can tell me if she looks slightly pregnant or regular... just in case.

She won't really look pregnant until right before she's due. Post pictures, but it will be hard to tell unless she's close to her due date.

Telling if she is pregnant or not often has more to do with movement than size. Many of my female's don't look significantly bigger, some do, but not much and not always. But a day or two before birth, you can see the pups moving inside her.

Hi I think I may be. In same case but I am worried for my gerbil Deliah she is about 1 1/2 years old an she is huge! All of a sudden she was fat! She looks like she's pregnant, but it's only her an her two sisters. Unless one of her sisters is a guy an I can't tell I have researched but came empty handed I think it might be a cyst but not sure. An my vet doesn't work with small animals an I can't afford her to go to the vet. Can someone plz help me out. She has also been eating a lot and drinking is that normal if she's preganant? Also she has been licking my skin like non-stop! What's wrong with my baby girl!? I need help I am worried. I am pretty sure it's not a tumor bcause she didn't become fat slowly it was like over night an the next day she was ballooned up. Also deliah has been sleeping a lot more an kinda made a little whole in her bedding to sleep in, it's in the Conor of her cage an her sisters are so nice an snuggle up with her whenever she wants to sleep. But the werid thing daisy I think might be a guy always gets up when I come in my room an she acts all protective. Any advice for my case? I am so worried I wish I could send a pic on here but I don't know how
