Our gerbil (Rose) has had a poorly eye for a couple of weeks. She is a year old and apart from the eye is her usual mischievious self. The right eye is swollen above the eyelid. There is no discharge or pus and she doesn't seem to be distressed by it. She is kept in a gerbilarium with wood shavings but no sawdust. Although she doesn't seem bothered by it but some advice would be great. Hopefully you can view the image link below: www.flickr.com/photos/markyjohn/9247144511/

I can't see it? Have you tried uploading it to a place like photobucket and then just copying and pasting the IMG code?

That's better. I see what you mean about her eye Although I am not sure what it could be. as there is no puss or weeping, I'm not sure if it could be something minor or serious.. Hopefully someone more experienced will b able to help. If you are concerned, I always suggest keeping them on just plain loo roll, no wood shavings etc. just to lessen any chance of it being irritated by other things.

My gerbil's eye looked like that when he had an eye infection, except he had a lot of red discharge (porphyrin) as well. If it is an eye infection, you'll need antibiotic ointment or drops specifically for this problem that are only available from a veterinarian.
Eye infections are very serious. Rodents are not able to fight off some infections very well. If I had not treated Dart's eye, he would have either lost his eye or the infection would have spread to the rest of his body.
I would give it a couple of days and watch closely. Her allergies might be acting up or she could have just scratched her eye while cleaning herself. If the problem does not resolve itself soon, I advise taking her to a vet. They will be able to tell if it is an infection or not.
