Thanks for the list. I actually just bought a bag of the Hartz Bonanza that you have on the slightly recommended list. It was the best I could find at the local stores. It actually looks pretty good a bit to high in pumpkin seeds and sunny seeds but I always pick some out anyways as treats. I'm adding some rice, dried macaroni, and some Cheerios to it. I think that will be decent until my order of Oxbow comes it.

At least you have the ingredient listed. We don't. The UK food labelling system is very devious , as explained in the link I gave.. Ie it seems that you can claim that something is "naturally preserved" , or has "no preservatives " if all the preserving and adding is done at the pre treatment pre processing phase. So a food can contain BHT or BHA if done at the pre processing stage. And you don't have to list it as an ingredient. Yes, a nice loophole . I don't think that because BHT is banned in the UK that they would ban it in all pet foods either. Not if you believe this article. www.pet-food-choice.co.uk/pet_food_labels.htm#.UzUx42tYCSMPlus, just because Stores stop supplying a particular brand I don't think you can safely conclude that it is due to it being dangerous. Any factor can be the reason eg a change in supply terms, competition deals, choosing to promote their own product where the profit margins are higher. Basically, stores supply and promote who pays the most. Even if they never sell any of the product, and even if it's cheaper to chuck it when it goes out of date. In the UK I've noticed that the chain pet stores / supermarket pet section sell their own brand or Wagg. The independents sell Geri gerbil. The question is though, is there a dried pet food with a reasonable shelf life which doesn't use some questionable preservative or anti oxidant? You need these things in order to have a shelf life of plus 100 days. It's either that or it's prohibitively expensive to supply and for people to buy. And if you read this article , you will feel ill at all the deviousness and non declarations that go on in pet food. ( focuses on cat and dog food mainly) You have been warned. www.pet-food-choice.co.uk/pet_food_ingredients.htm#.UzTDJWtYCSMAll I have concluded is that just because a dodgy ingredient is not listed, it doesn't mean it's not in it. Yes, the loopholes. And some manufacturers are more up front with their food declarations than others. "you have no way of knowing if prior to what the manufacturer did , someone else added other ( dodgy) preservatives " This deviousness may also apply in The States. Even if you make your own mix, how on earth are the ingredients preserved?

I believe you're in the UK, correct? I know that the UK and US versions of Supreme foods are all slightly different. I have a packet of the US food on-hand and it's listed- "soybean oil (preserved with BHT) Does the package say "preserved with BHT" or does it just say "soybean oil". I'm in Canada and mine just says "soybean oil". I was concerned about this so I called the company to inquire if the Gerri Gerbil sold in Canada was manufactured in the US or the UK. The rep said that the Canadian supply is supplied from the UK. Now I don't know what to think!!! I just want healthy food for my gerbs! !!

It does say that it's preserved with BHT. I supposed if it's not on your packet then it's likely not in the food.
If the man said that the supply comes from the UK, then it's safe and BHT-free. Ours is produced here in the USA, where BHT is legal, so they use it in the food.

Oh that's awful!! I wonder if there is a Canadian site that those in the US could order from...I would think that the shipping would be cheaper perhaps??

my package from petmountain is packaged for multiple countries and doesn't contain BHT. The package I recieved from petmountain has BHT listed in the USA section. There are several different countries' labels printed on the package, but the one that you should be reading is the USA one, which does contain BHT.
