I was just thinking about one of my first gerbils. She was called Smølfine (Smurfette in danish). Smølfine was very special because she could jump very high and long. If someone else was holding her and she saw me, she would just take off using her hind legs. Then she would fly up to 1 meter through the air and land on me. She was very fond of me and only jumped if it was because she could get to me. Has anyone else had a flying gerbil?

We had one like that many years ago. His name was Bart and he pulled off an amazing escape and stayed on the lam for a couple months. By the time we caught him he was one incredibly fit gerbil. He jumped remarkable heights, though I'm not sure it was quite a full meter!

Flying gerbils must be pretty rare since no one else has commented on my post ;-)

I have found that some gerbils are quite aware that they can jump high and far, but others do not even try. Not sure why that is. We always have a secure lid on our tank, but our current pair do not jump. When I was a kid, we once kept gerbils in a large cardboard box while waiting to get a new cage. They jumped right out, at least two feet up with no troubles.
Smølfine was obviously a very tame gerbil. Jumping onto you shows she had no fear. Very sweet.

None of mine have been able to jump like that. It must have been quite amazing to see her jump like that.

My gerbils are just babies, I think that they're around 6 weeks old. Last night we were holding them and one of them kept jumping off of my son onto my bed, a distance of well over a foot. That doesn't seem that long but she is really small so I was impressed. Maybe when she grows up she will be a flying gerbil like yours.

My gerbil Muffy did that. They both had a dumb moment and buried their food, but forgot it was there (I could see it mixed with the bedding). So they were hungry. Muffy was jumping like half a foot high. I gave them food afterwards though.
