I hate it. Karen has 9 pups and they will be one week old tomorrow. One of the pups is only half the size of the others. It is very skinny and it's just lying there and not moving around like the other pups. I can't do anything about it, but I really feel like a bad pet owner just waiting for nature to take its course. I am checking on the pups a couple of times every day, and it's only getting worse ;-(

9 is a large litter for gerbils. I would be surprised if there was NOT one pup having a rough time, statistically, with a litter that big. Not much you can do, unfortunately. I agree that it's sad when one fails to thrive. Best of luck.

Thank you both. It is a horrible situation to be stuck in. I think about it all the time. I know that nine pups is a big litter. Luckily it is her seventh (and last) litter, so she is an experienced mom. She is taking very good care of the little ones

This afternoon I found two dead babies in the tank. One black and one agouti. They both looked perfectly fine - not thin or deformed. They were just lying in a corner app 15 cm from the nest. So now there is seven pups left. They vary in size and at least two have a "fixed wrist". The two dead ones did'nt have fixed wrists

Breeding is not for the weak of heart. That's just how it goes sometimes. Hope the rest do well!

A quick update: the rest of the litter is doing fine. The runt is still alive and has grown, but he is still smaller than the others. He is very active, so I am pretty sure that he will make it. He had a fixed wrist to begin with, but now his wrist is perfectly normal
