We can't give you an answer to this question... it really depends on your personal preferences. If you do go for gerbils, then you should get two, not one, since gerbils shouldn't live alone.

Other factors to consider: How much moving do expect to do in the coming years? Gerbils only live 2-6yrs, but there are restrictions on taking them to California and overseas. Cats require a much longer time commitment, 12-20yrs, and can not live in dorms and some apartments.
How much money can you spend on your pet? Gerbils are fairly inexpensive to keep as regards food and toys. Cats are more expensive, especially if they are fed an organic and varied diet. Both animals can rack up high vet bills if sick, but cats need to go to the vet every year for a check up which costs at least $100.
What kind of space can you provide? Gerbils can be kept in a room in a tank/cage and only let out once a day for a few hours. Cats will need all the space you can give them and separate areas for their litter and food. Cats are also harder on furniture and carpet (scratching and vomiting).
As the previous poster mentioned if you decide to get gerbils you should get two gerbils. I would add that if you are not home all day you should get two cats so they can amuse each other.
I love cats and think they are one of the best pets around, but they are bigger commitment and that needs to be taken into consideration.

well if you have enough time and patience you can get a pair of gerbils and a kitten... you simply have to teach the kitten that those gerbils are a no-no. just make sure that the cage they are in is cat-proof and gerbil-escape-proof. i have successfully housed rodents and felines in the same household together without a problem. you just have to have the time and patience to train the cat to stay away from the rodents. also be sure you have enough money and time so both of them will stay happy!
