Aspen is what I use- never had any issue with it. It's not all that expensive either, and it smells better then any other type of substrate I've used. But I'm sure the ones Rhianna mentioned are fine too. Good luck and hopefully she gets better once you change the bedding!!

I have changed the bedding to paper based and the sneezing has calmed down but not stopped completely :/ she still squeaks a little when breathing but not as much thank goodness!! I do have another question though, the bedding i've got, she seems to be eating it? I watched carefully and she chews a little bit off, chews it at the back of her mouth and sits there like that, chewing, for about 5 mins before doing anything else? :/ She also drinks more than Giggle and Nezumi I am hopefully getting a larger cage tomorrow and i will show you guys some pictures then Thanks for reminding me to post! Sorry, i've been kind of busy most of easter :3

It's so great to hear she's better! maybe she could have a cronic condition? I'm sure she's safe with you, great thing you didn't give up on her <3 you're awesome I have little experience, I've had for some months my first gerbils (two girls). All I can say is my little builder (she's the one who likes to make nests) does that too, she chews the bedding (all types of bedding), but she doesn't swallow it, so I stopped obsessing over that, because I was watching them so focused I was becoming paranoid hahaha they're OK. But it would be very nice if someone with more experience could share his/her thoughts on this.

Dusty uses a paper based bedding and chews it too. I think he's softening it to make it more comfortable to nest in. he's done this for the past year that I've had him and there has never been a problem with him actually eating it so don't worry

Chewing bedding definitely isn't a problem. My gerbils have been chewing bedding their entire lives- they shred it to make their nests with. Glad to hear she's doing better and hope she keeps improving!
