I recently bought a 30 gallon tank and it has a lot more room than my old tank. I could put in more bedding but I just don't want their food bowl to be buried. The water bottle is left to the food bowl. I don't put a wheel in for reasons I stated in an old thread and posts. There is a little straw basket on the left corner that I got form Dollar General. I made a hole for a door and they're chewed a few other doors through. I put their food bowl on top of that with a glass water bottle to the left. A bendy bridge leads up to that basket top but it's low enough to where they can jump up there anyway. There is a stone cave to the opposite corner and a few tubes. On the right corner across from the cave, there is a wooden play house. There is also chew sticks and other stuff you probably can't see because it's either buried or just out of frame. I thought of putting some hammocks or maybe kebobs hanging from the mesh at the top. There is room for shelves and an upper level but I'm not sure how I'd put that in. You probably can't tell from the pictures, but the tank is pretty large. Probably big enough to house four gerbils; I only have two.

It looks fantastic. It's a 30 gallon breeder tank, correct? Those are absolutely massive. I bet they're having a blast.
Like keldamouse said, hammocks are fine as long as they aren't fabric. You can make them from things hung from chains such as coconuts, wicker baskets, grass mats, or even just flat wooden pieces. It'd be a great way to use up some of the height of the tank without burying the food bowl and water bottle.

Yes, the 30 gallon is pretty big. It's wide, long, and high. It's meant for reptiles or amphibians but Pet Smart had it on sale for 79.99. I think the original price was over 100$.
I would like to do something with all the space from the height. I could just load it with bedding and scatter feed instead of using the bowl but it would also cause a problem with them reaching the water bottle depending on how they shift the bedding around.
I'll probably add in some hanging toys but it would great to make a second level or something with shelves. I decided since I haven't been giving them out of tank time as often as I should, and I don't put a wheel because of some injury related incidents I saw before, that they needed more space. Wish I would have taken a picture of it next to the old tank though so you can get a better idea of the size.

If you look up "DIY hamster platform" or something like that, you'll find tons of tutorials for making wooden shelves. The problem is that gerbils will probably chew through the legs in a few days. You could possibly make shelves from glass and aquarium sealant.
What size tank were they in before?

The old tank was marked a 20L and 30X12X12. I went to Petsmart today and bought some hanging kabobs. They have loofah, wood, pine cones, and metal bells. I just remembered that pine bedding is unsafe for gerbils but I read up on the cones and apparently they're not dangerous. Here is an updated pic with the kebabs hanging from the corners. There is also another bendy bridge I added in the left corner. I did also buy a wooden/rope bridge thing meant for birds that's supposed to hang but the hooks are just too thick to go into the mesh at the top so I'm going to have to return it. I saw a woman at Petsmart buying a hamster and chose one of those colorful gimmick cages with plastic tubes that are way too small and told her she should get a glass tank instead but of course she didn't listen. Also saw some hyper kid who begged his parents to buy him a hamster. The sales clerk told them robo dwarf hamsters are not the best option for small children because they're very fast, not really meant to be handled, and easily get lost if they're dropped. She said they should go with a Syrian but again, the parents didn't listen and bought him one. Bleh… I try not to think about that stuff but it irritates me how ignorant people are I feel sorry for those two hamsters. and just for fun here is a pic I just took of my gerbils trying to act sexy for the camera:

Sorry i know i am a little late on this but...
One idea that i had for the food and water problem was maybe a topper that covers half of the tank. Since you,re tank is so big it would be a pain to get such a big topper. I just recently moved to a 30 gallon and the toppers were outrageously priced. So just used my old 20 gallon topper and got my dad to cut me a peice of wood that fir the leftover space.I hope i helped
