Hi, I have three male gerbils in a falco pet cage (its a tank with a topper) it's pretty much filled with bedding, lots of wooden bridges, houses, plenty of cardboard etc. They also have one of these www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/small_pets/accessories/bridges_stairs/bridges/101635 hanging from the top of the cage part. One of my gerbils has taken to climbing on the top and chewing endlessly on the metal grips that attatch it. Is this bad for him? I've taken it out at the moment as I wasn't sure, this is the only metal in the cage and he doesn't chew the bars. Is it ok for me to put it back in or is the silly thing going to break his teeth? Thank you for any help.

If someone else has different advice, I would go for their's, as I don't know for sure. But: My gerbils have chewed on metal and ceramic and so far no damage. I would assume it won't cause any problems, so I would think it's okay to put it back in. Looks like a neat toy.

Thanks, yeah they do love it, and they haven't chewed the rope so far so it's still intact. I think I'll just put it in when I'm in the room for the moment, see how it goes. I gave them an extra 2 inches of bedding yesterday so hopefully that will distract them for a while.

Chewing on metal is completely safe and normal. I think they get some sense of accomplishment out of it...

That's good then, didn't really want to take it out as they enjoyed it. It's back in now and the metal chewer has only been chomping on the wood so far so perhaps he's got the right idea thankfully!
Thanks for the help

One of my gerbils used to chew on one of the metal bars holding up their wheel. The angle she was chewing at made her nose irritated and raw rubbing against the metal. Other than that your gerbils should be fine knawing on it.

He's not rubbing on anything as he chews so he should be ok, I'll keep an eye on it though. He's busy chewing egg boxes at the moment so hopefully that will keep him busy for a time
