I am sorry, I am a little defensive. We are heartbroken and hoping for the best but my fear is that they might be gone. Poor frodo looks so lost in his cage . And I don't want my other boys to be afraid.

UPDATE We found them both and that are back where they belong. Pinnin is doing great and running around as normal. Samwise is not doing aw well. He came to me and I new he wasnt good right away. He isn't running around and has his eyes closed most of the time. He is shaking quite a bit. We gave him some pieces of cucumber which he seemed to appreciate and I have some scrambled egg cooling in the fridge for him. I am not sure if he is going to be ok. I want him to rest for a bit and calm down but we may be taking him in to have the vet check him out if he doesn't perk up.
Update: we have an appointment with the vet for 2:45

It sounds like you do provide a nice habitat for them. While it's not what most of us consider suitable, it works for you and your gerbils are happy and (usually) safe in it which is what matters.
I'm glad to hear that you found them. I really hope that the vet can help Samwise.

Maybe the gerbil is just sick because he hasn't been able to get to food or water for the few days he's been gone, or perhaps he ate or chewed something he wasn't supposed to. That must be a huge relief though.

Samwise died on the way to the vet this afternoon. We found a cough drop with a chewed wrapper so we don't know if he tried to eat that and got sick or if he got hurt while on the loose. Pippin is napping with Frodo, he looks like he is ok.

I'm so sorry to hear that he didn't make it. It must be very heartbreaking to come home from vacation to this. At least the other two are okay and they still have each other. RIP little Samwise

I'm glad you found them, but very sorry that Samwise didn't make it. At least you can have some closure, which is better than if you had not found them at all. :-( You did the best you could for them, many gerbils would not be fortunate enough to have owners search so diligently for them and take them to the vet.

Lots of love to you and Samwise, I'm glad you got to find him and hold him before he passed. Try not to be sad or angry, just cuddle and give tons of love to your other two little guys

Would it have been possible to find out the cause of death at the vet? I've heard they are able to do this but I'm not sure.
Sorry about your loss. I am glad you were able to find the other one though and that he's doing ok.

Two of my girls have escaped more than once - the last effort was for them to lay on their backs on the roof of their tunnel and dig at the (sliding) roof from underneath until it slid open!
They just climbed out and had a good look round the place. They now have weights on top of their tank!

Thank you all for your kind words. I did not think to ask the vet to detrmine what caused Samwise's death. Honestly, when we got there we never saw the vet, there was apparently some other emergency at the same time. We inquired about a private cremation so we could get his ashes back and it would have cost $240 so I can't imagine what it would have cost to have an autopsy done. Samwise was burried in the backyard under a tree with Charlie and Zoom. I am keeping a very close eye on Pippin, I am so afraid that they got into something when they were out. He was running around like usual yesterday. He woke up to have his morning treat when I got up but is back asleep now.

I'm so sorry to hear about Samwise! My gerbil Peanut just died yesterday and I know it's really tough. I'm really glad Pippin is okay though and hope he stays that way. RIP Samwise!
