Please help, my gerbil Daisy is in need of Urgent Care! When I home today, she was sitting on her ledge, hunched over with laboured breathing. Her eyes were barely open and her fur was unkempt. In February, her sister, Baby, passed away in my hands , she was acting just like Daisy before she died. I don't know if it was sickness or natural causes. Daisy doesn't have any clicking when she breathes, but I'm really worried. Will I lose my little Daisy?

Is there someway to get her to a vet? I'm not an experienced gerbil-keeper but labored breathing can be pretty serious and indicative of a respiratory infection... In this thread (which is the first one that came up when I searched labored breathing: gerbilforum.proboards.com/thread/20929) the advice was to keep the gerbil warm with a hot water bottle on one side of the cage/tank and keep her comfortable until the owner could get her to a vet... Good luck, hopefully someone will come along soon to give you more informed advice!

My little girl had some bad breathing issues as well. We thought she was going to pass, unable to get her to the vet I did the only thing that I thought would help. I cleaned the cage extremely well and went off to get so clean bedding to freshen the air. I also went off and bought some vitamins to try to boost her immune system to help with whatever it was.
but if you have access to a vet, then I would go, if not you can try this. I can't guarantee anything, but this worked for me.
Hoping you some good results.

Daisy doesn't have any clicking when she breathes, but I'm really worried. Will I lose my little Daisy? my gerbil just passed 3 days ago , exactly the same sympstoms, id say pneumonia . needs urgent treatment, baytril antibiotics and plenty of warmth. my gerbil was 5 though,he didn't stand a chance my gerbils symptoms were in order ... had energy but kept stopping and hunching over, like he forgot where he was. 1 eye half shut all the time. then came weight loss. then always sleeping. then not eating much or drinking much. then not drinkin or eating atall. and his body was cold to touch then noticeable panting in abdominal muscles. and clicking sound from his nose, you have to put your ear right to the nose.at first it was faint, it got louder though. unfortunately I only noticed he was sick when it was too late because he was 5 years old I thought the stopping and hunching was just old age. we did get him x-rayed , to confirm pneumonia, and onto antibiotics (baytril) , plus he was on oxbow liquid food, but it was too late. all the best to your lil gerbil , sorry to sound depressing:( . just wana help save any gerbil I can now. and by the way make sure you got to a small animal vets. they are the same price and so worth it. cat and dog vets wont have a clue I can bet on it.

Thanks for all the help, I will try to get her to a vet today, but my mom wouldn't take my other gerbil, Baby when she was like this. I have a neck wrap, the kind you microwave. Should i put that in there? Ill clean her cage very well, and giver her lots of toilet paper to make a nest. I have Vitamin C for my guinea pigs, should I put it in her water? She adores peas, should I give her some of those as well? Im away from home, will be back at 3 so I dont know how she is. But yes, she perks up when i come to her cage but she just stays hunched over or lies down in her nest, and doesnt leave it often. Its too soon to lose my last gerbil

Also, for the warm water bottle, how hot/warm should the water be?

Also, for the warm water bottle, how hot/warm should the water be? If it's not too hot for you to touch it comfortably, it should be fine. So, as hot as it can be without it hurting you to touch it for a little while.

Was looking doing some digging for you and came across this post from this forum:http://gerbilforum.proboards.com/thread/21546 within the post they have this link which details the ovarian cyst about halfway down the page. www.egerbil.com/neoplasia.htmlAll I can think of is to have surgery to remove it, but I don't know if it's a good idea if she is an older gerbil due to the stress a surgery can place on a body. I would consult your vet, and get a look at cost and care needed for something like this. Hope this helps

Thanks, I dont think we will take her to the vet because I heard ovarian cysts heal on their own, is this true? But I cleaned out her cage really good, put some Vit C in her water, and got a jar and filled it with warm water. I also gave her some peas. She was pretty happy about that!

How do you know she has an ovarian cyst if you haven't taken her to the vet?

Unfortunately, all the pages that I can read on the topic are for us humans, but they do that talk about both waiting it out and surgery. It depends on the type of cyst. Usually they go away, but if the cyst is cancerous then you will want to get it removed.
By the way, how old is your Daisy? I don't think you mentioned it.
