Today I say a male gerbil, probably 3/4 months old all alone. There were 3 last week and two were sold leaving him. I'm very surprised the shop allowed this. anyway I feel bad for him as I know they don't do well on their own so if I was to get him could I get another 2 males, probably 8 weeks old and introduce them via splitcage? i can't stop thinking about him

I just got a male gerbil today. . . not for that reason but I have ended up with gerbils before because I felt bad for them. So yes, if you're willing to get three gerbils and have the space, three males at that age wouldn't be too hard to introduce I wouldn't think.

There probably wont be any problems bonding him to two others since they are all pretty young, plus I hear males bond better than females. And I've been in your shoes before. Every time we go to the pet store I always have to look at the rodents, and once there was a lone male gerbil who looked so sad. I wanted to get him sooo bad but mom said my two was enough. Couldn't stop thinking of that poor baby for at least two weeks. I hope he got a loving home.

I always feel sad when I see gerbils left on there own in pet shops, and they always seem to be white with red eyes gerbils which makes it sadder. My next gerbil is definitely going to be white with red eyes. 3 young males should be easy enough to introduce.

Ok so went back and got him this morning having thought of him all night.....he's adorable and very calm to handle, not at all skittish. He's black and white and very pretty so am very surprised he was left behind.
I did ask why they don't try to pair up lone gerbils but got the usual response that it wouldn't work.
So, now I need to find two young males...they will probably be 8/10 weeks, is that going to be ok?
I'll be back to let you know how I get on

Congrats then on the new gerbil! I love black and white gerbils. 8-10 weeks should be fine. Keep us updated!

congrats on your new gerbil! Shelby was on her own at the pet store but I had just had my Simon pass away afew days before and was planning on getting another and there weren't any at the SPCA. Shelby will be one next month and is doing well on her own but I'm home a lot so she gets enough attention from me and is quite the dominant girl.
take care,
Tammy

This happened to me 3 times haha! Now have a very happy trio, and the beginnings of a happy pair (mesh has been out of the split 1 week tomorrow!)
Fang was alone and between 4-6 months old. We got 2 pups to split with him and that went great. Almost a year later, we found Twitch on his own and took him home. 3 weeks ago, we found Vader- about to be on his own as the only boy in a litter in a petshop... Now he lives with Twitch!
Other half has officially banned me from pet shops haha

Whilst searching the internet I found someone looking for homes for an accidental litter. I called her and she had 2 grey boys, 9 weeks old I'll be honest, grey isn't a colour I'd probably choose but when I saw them I just fell in love with them. They are identical and I cannot tell the difference (yet). I'm calling them "the twins" So I've now created a split in my tank and Percy and the twins seems to be doing well and so far showing positive signs. will keep you updated....

So happy for you!! I hold my breath every time I walk into the pet store in town and hope there are no gerbils in stock and especially no lone gerbils!!
