Hello all.
So recently I got my old boy (1yr+ old) Silver a friend, a pup (tiny male, unknown age, but guessing less than 4 months) who I named Smoke.
They are now happily together in a 10gal tank with a tank topper. I noticed a smell within a week since I put them in the same cage. It was like hay and musk smell. So I cleaned the tank. That was two days ago and I can already smell it again. It is not an unpleasant odor, but it's there.
Is it because 1) Silver is marking more than usual 2) Smoke is a pup and pups smell more than adults 3) I added Oxbox mix into their usual mix of Tropical Carnival 4) Other
And what can I do to fix this? I never had a smell. My other cage doesn't smell at all.

Its probably the topper. They get up in the top and pee and it drips. This is why I don't use toppers.

Could you try to sniff around their habitat and see if it's coming from one area in particular? If it's a musky gerbilly smell it could be their own scent from marking more since they've been introduced. (I don't know anything about this though). Maybe trying picking up the gerbs and see if they have the same smell up close?
If it's more of a toilety smell then it could be that they're using a certain spot in the cage and it's building up. If you could find where that spot is, you could clean it more often or put something absorbent there
Edit: I think it's unlikely to be to do with the food, unless it is the smell of the food itself (which you will easily recognise by sniffing the food itself).

Aha! It is the food. I put my nose into the bag and took a big wiff and that has the musk/hay scent concentrated there. Not using this stuff again.
