Are they common in females? I'm getting two gerbils, one is 1 year old and the other is 1 and 7 months.

I hope you are enjoying your new gerbils! I believe that females are more likely than males to get scent gland tumors, but if these are caught early they can be removed easily by the vet. Gerbils can get other types of cancers the same as humans. The best thing to do is to take good care of them- feed them healthy food, and hopefully they will have long happy lives!

Males are more likely to get scent gland tumors. Females tend towards ovarian cysts in their old age.
