Hello, So fortunately i have not yet had to take either of my Gerbils to the vets. But im wondering if i ever did, would i have to take both of them do they are not separated as when the other comes back he may have a strange smell from the vets, as they have never been separated before? Im just worried that they would end up not recognizing each other if they were separated for like an hour or half an hour? Thankyouuu

Personally, I doubt it. I've had gerbils separated the long before. If you're worried about strange smells from the vet, you can give a sand bath before putting them back together, might help. Just in case, if you ever have two gerbils separated for more then an hour, watch them for awhile when you put them back.

A separation of a few hours isn't long enough trigger a declan. However, I always preferred bringing the sick gerbil's healthy cagemate along for comfort and familiarity. My vet is also awesome - he would thoroughly examine the healthy gerbil(teeth, chest sounds, scent gland, etc), but only bill me an office visit + examination for the sick one.
