So I found a paper toilet roll and gave it to them and they shared it like the lady and tramp. Basically opposite sides. I don't know if this is a good sign or not.

So I've had them together for about 4 hours and no huge fights just tiny ones that you would consider play fighting. I also put a wheel in there and they are learning to take turns on it.

Hi there!! I wouldn't put toys in with them just yet so that they are kind of forced to interact with each other. Toilet paper tubes are ok and tissue paper but I'd take out the hide. You want the to sleep in the same nest so giving a hide could give a place for one to hide or avoid the other.

I took it out awhile ago, but should I take out the wheel because they seem to share it pretty well because the take turns. They were also helping each other dig once.

Ok so I've decided to separate them after about 9 hours total of them being together. It'll only be for the night and until i get home from school afterwards I will try to monitor them again after placing them with each other. Don't worry I have also went and bought a reptile lid for an aquarium tank and I've placed it on top of one tank witht two books. I only got one because only one of my gerbils is a jumper.

You should always have lids for your gerbils really as a safety factor for them. Once they are out of the tank they can get themselves into all sorts of trouble - see other thread currently running.
Also, don't forget that although your shavings currently reach nowhere near the top, it only take a couple of hours digging to 'accidentally' move all the sawdust over to one side and then they have built themselves a nice escape ramp without even meaning to. You may think this isn't possible - but it happens all the time.
Hopefully they will go back fine together when you try again today - maybe throw in some treat-like food before hand so that they are slightly distracted on first meeting again.
Good luck.

A gerbil fight is a ball of death and very fast obvious when you see it as you can hardly see them they move so fast!
Boxing and a little bit of humping is perfectly natural and is just pecking order stuff which they need to figure out to remain together.

After a couple of play fights the two fell asleep about a couple of inches away from each other. I have a picture but I don't know how to post it. to post a picture just upload it to photo bucket and them copy the img code into the text box on the thread. it will look like a long line of numbers and lettes but when you post the message it will come up as a photo glad they are getting along xx

Sadly i was right all the progress was lost between the two. I tried to put them together and they acted as if they didnt know each other and fought and I immediately stopped the fight and separated. Also I might not be able to buy the material needed for the mesh divider so I won't be able to start actual split cage until i get the money which will probably be a couple of weeks. I don't know how they already broke out into a fight after so much progress between the two yesterday without the split cage.

They were also very scared because after I seperated I pick one up at a time to check for injury ( luckily none ) and when I did the other saw and started to thump.

Black one is Minnie and the Peach one is Peaches. Also is odd that Minnie loves to sleep outside her hideout mostly.

Currently I've made them trade cages hopefully getting used to the other gerbils scent. I am basically trying to do split cage but with 2 10 gallons. This is best I can do for now until I can get enough to make the mesh divider. I will continue to do this everyday until I get the divider. Thanks for your help everyone sucks that the two ended up fighting.
