I have two gerbils, mama gerbil got her pups, 4 of them, this litter is her second, first one died first day and this her second one is much healthier and all 4 are alive for 6 days now.
But because I did not want any more pups because it is hard to find them new home were I live, I have decided to separate them with glass. I know it should be wire but friend who was not familiar with gerbils and make aquariums made me one big tank with glass separator in between which is removable.
Problem was that few mm were left from glass to bottom of aquarium on one side because it doesn't fit perfectly.
She has found it, and was franticly dinging. So she made wound right after her nose on skin it is red (nose is fine it is not like images on net that show red nose this skin after the nose). I have putted clean sand and let them reunite when they want so much I was feeling bad to keep them separated after she did this. She is clam, feeding pups like nothing happened.
But I am afraid that tear would lead to infection. Which antibiotic is safe for small animals? She have rubes so much while she was digging that she removed hair, upper skin coat and now it is red but it doesn't bleed.
At home I currently have chloramphenicol it is for eyes (for humans) and I have researched on line, but found mentions that it is used orally for gerbils nothing about creme.
There is also one creme called Flugocite with zinc used for both human and animals here are ingredients - enzyme in buffer solution, boric acid, essential oil of lavender, white petrolatum, anhydrous lanolin, cholesterol, liquid paraffin, essential oils of wild flowers. It is used on gunny pigs and rabbits. I can not find information for small rodents.
We do not have nesosprine here.

I am thinking of treating wound with Betadine (Povidone-Iodine) diluted in water...

I am so sorry to hear about your gerbils who passed away. The problem with using an antibiotic creme is that a gerbil can lick it off and get sick. You can try wiping the injury with a saline solution (salt dissolved in warm water)- this will help prevent infection but will sting a bit. I am not familiar with Flugocite, but if it says it is safe for guinea pigs and rabbits it is likely safe for gerbils, although I am not certain. You can also put pure honey on the wound as it is antibiotic. Also, just keeping her in clean bedding or toilet paper will help. If she gets an infection you may have to get oral antibiotics from the vet. I hope she heals well and feels better soon! As for the split cage set-up, she will keep digging at the gap. You can either block it up with aquarium sealant, (and maybe you could also ask your friend to drill some holes in the glass so the gerbils can smell each other). It may also be really easy to put wire mesh in the place of the glass. This website may have some helpful instructions: www.twinsqueaks.com/split-tank.htmlGood luck with your gerbils
