I was pretty pleased with my husband coming up with this "hack!" We took the old starter hamster kit they were living in before I adopted them and bent the sides in. The ramp is not ideal; I want a longer one or something more permanent than cardboard to prop it up, but they are enjoying the space for now. My ultimate goal is to move the food and water to the topper so that they can have more bedding, but I want to make sure the ramp is 100% before I do. Pic link hereThe wheel that came with the kit is too small for them. I don't want to take up floor space. Does anyone have an idea of how to safely affix a good-sized wheel to the cage topper in a way they could access it? Thanks!

Nice job! Also, nice freebie tank and stand. If you fill the tank 3/4 with bedding and cardboard boxes/tubes, the ramp issue will solve itself. Gerbils have no difficulty hopping up a few inches, even if they dig out the area beneath the ramp. I don't even have a ramp between the my topper shelf and the bedding - my girls hop up and down the three inch high gap effortlessly.
Moving the food and water topside will provide more space and make cleaning easier. If you can fashion another small shelf of the other side, the gerbils might use it as a toilet - making cleaning even easier!
As for the wheel, many wheels are designed with a tab that fits between the cage bars. A 90 degree twist of the tab locks the wheel in place.

The wheel they have now snaps in the side, but I didn't see a wheel you could snap in sold separately when I was at the store. Looks a Silent Spinner might, now that I googled it. Thanks again!

The silent spinner can be attached directly to wire cages or used with the provided stand. Personally, I hate the stand because it turns the 'Silent Spinner' into a 'Wobbly, Noisy Spinner'. I've found that the 6.5 inch Silent Spinner is just barely large enough for adult female gerbils, but probably too small for adult males. I wish that they made an 8 inch version, but the next size up is 12 inches. If gerbils can't run comfortably in it, they'll just use it as a potty.

Is there another brand that attaches to the side? 12 inches seems big!
