I adopted some gerbils from a friend's daughter and inherited a big bag of food that she gave me. It's Wild Harvest Hamster and Gerbil, Advanced Nutrition Formula. I plan to transition to something else. (I'm open to suggestions of something readily available at PetSmart or Petco, but that's a different issue.) In the mean time, should I be supplementing with something to increase the fat level? The two boys are very active and healthy looking. One is a little thick in the middle, but I haven't weighed them yet. The protein is a little high and the fat is less than half the recommended amount! Should I add something in before the transition? If so, what's something that would be good?

Gerbils can do well on a range of nutrition levels. They can't always get precise nutrients in the wild so they're pretty adaptable that way. If your gerbils are on the younger side the protein is fine. Excess protein only becomes an issue in older gerbils that may have weaker kidneys. Fat requirements vary depend on activity level so if they're healthy don't worry about it. Still, that food isn't ideal given the food colours, higher corn percentage and some junkier ingredients. See if they're even eating all of it. Feed them something you feel good about feeding.

I've been really happy with Higgens Sunburst food. It has a ton a variety and no artificial colors (I try to steer away from any artificial coloring)
