Say your gerbil has had an allergic reaction to something and his nose is getting sore from all the scratching he's doing. You put him in a clean enclosure with just paper towels for bedding to see if it clears up. How long do you wait before taking him to the vet for allergy or inflammation medicine?

There is no such thing as allergy medication for gerbils so a trip to the vet would be pointless. What you need to do is get your gerbil away from the allergen. Usually that means changing their bedding. I've been able to clear up most of our nose issues by putting a tall sided container of sand in with the gerbils and leaving it there.

We had this once and because the gerbil had scratched its nose raw it wasn't enough to just switch the bedding, as the scratching had caused an infection. We gave it two days before going to the vet after seeing no improvement, and she was given antibiotics. This cleared it up inside of three days and the fur was all grown back in 10. Id say if it still looks nasty or is an open wound in two days then it will need to be seen by a vet. Just my experience though.

Thanks guys - It's already been at least 3 or 4 days and his nose is pretty red. And I think he has scratched it bloody, so I guess I'll take him in tomorrow
