Hey Folks, I'm kinda new here so sorry if I get this wrong. My daughter has two gerbils, Beauty and Beast, they're approximately 4 or 5 months old. We've had them now for a few weeks, we did ask the pet shop for two males but I'm not convinced. And I'm sorry to say that I'm useless at sexing them...even after looking at a ton of pictures for comparison. I think I have a boy and a girl but I'm no expert and as I say I'm pretty useless at sexing them. So I was hoping someone here would be able to help. I'd like to introduce you to Beauty And the shot Beauty hates me for I'm kinda sure Beauty is a guy but I'm no expert. And this is the beautiful Beast And she didn't want to co-operate so this is as good as I can get. I would've tried again but I don't want her upset. Any help would be appreciated. I don't mind what sex they are, I just don't want pups under foot. Thank you for looking.

Hi, thanks for such a quick response. I think that red was caused by the lighting. Normally his eyes are the normal black, but when when light catches his eyes they seem to get a beautiful red shine/glow (which is part of the reason boyfriend finally accepted the name Beast). Beauty has a similar taint but his is more of an amber taint.

Thanks Shooting Star. I think it's hard to tell with Beast because of the reluctance to co-operate. Everyone seems to think they're at least same sex which is the bonus I was hoping for. I don't mind the idea of pups but I don't think we're really prepared for pups. Thanks for all the help.

I would say that Beast is female. Beauty, I'm not sure. I can see why you are confused. Could you take a few more photos of both of them?

Actually having looked at the Beast picture more closely, I'm not sure either way now. I thought I had got the hang of sexing too!

lol it doesn't help that Beast hates to stay still for anything He/She is constantly on the move, always gnawing or running around like a crazy person, redoing the nest, which is part of the reason I love them so much. Beauty is much more relaxed and as you can see in the pictures she/he loves a being around humans. Beauty will climb all over me if she's given the opportunity whereas Beast would much prefer to be left to her/his own devices. Do you still want me to get more pictures? In a few hours it'll be the evening playtime for them so I can try to get a few then.

Thats just the skin pigment. Nutmegs are selfs, and are "black based" so they generally have dark skin.
The Pied Agouti, is marked (pied). This causes some areas to be without any pigment, pink, or with pigment black. Which is why some of it is dark and some of it is light

Ah, I didn't know that. I did a little research into coloring as Beauty was a beautiful soft gold when I bought her, but her fur started to get darker. I found it was natural so relaxed on that front. Learn something new everyday
