I want to get my gerbils a bigger tank but i'm struggling to get one for the amount I can afford, so I am instead thinking of getting another smaller one instead and somehow connecting them together, like have them next to each other and somehow make it so they can get into both. Any ideas?

First off I can't remember if you're in the US or not, but if so then I suggest waiting until the end of the month or beginning of next month and get a big tank at Petco during their dollar per gallon sale. I got a 29 gallon tank there in March which was originally priced at around $80 but I paid $29 for it. Now to answer your question, one way would of course be to use hamster tubes. We all know that the problem with that is gerbils tend to chew them. Some gerbils don't, but most will. If you have gerbils that somehow don't tend to chew as much then that'd probably be your easiest option. I've also seen some people take a topper and alter it so that the two tanks are up against each other, and the topper is between them, with a shelf in the middle and a ramp on either side so that they can climb up and over the side of the tanks without escaping... I'm not sure if I explained that well enough? But anyways, you'd have to fashion some sort of wood or mesh lids to fit into the parts of the tanks that aren't covered by the topper, but that wouldn't be hard to do. Here, this sort of explains what I'm talking about: Edit: Here's something interesting I just found uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20110805141949AA6Jxhy
