Hi, I'm a new gerbil breeder (not a new gerbil owner though) and found this forum, so I was hoping for some advice. I'm currently trying to breed two 6 month old gerbils. I introduced them when the female was in heat, so they bred then but she went back into heat several days later. Then they didn't breed for a week and a half, so I was positive that she was pregnant. Just now, though, they started mating again! Is it normal for a female to simply not take the first few times? Or is it safe to assume she's just infertile? Thanks for any help.

I would never assume that a female was infertile after just just a few weeks of trying - and of course, have you even considered that it be the male?
Anyway, I would leave them together for a bit longer, as all the while they are mating, they will live happily together and you can bide your time. I had a female who didn't have a litter for some time - but they weren't mating as regularly as yours. I also had a female who had one litter and then took a 6-month break before breeding again.
However, if over the next few weeks they are constantly mating (like more than once a week) - then it might be fairer to split them up otherwise the poor things are going to be worn out through trying.
If this is your first coupling you are bound to want things to happen much faster, so if you want to swap them out you could - but then you have doubled your tank requirements before you even have any pups - so you might need to get some more spares...

Thanks! I meant to say her or the male, since I know its possible for him to be infertile. I'll leave them together as you suggested- this is actually try two (I tried to introduce the male to one of my other females but they simply wouldn't get along) and I don't want to use any of my other gerbils if possible; I don't currently have any other males and as for females they're already living in pairs and I hate to separate them. As you said, I'm pretty eager, but I'm willing to wait it out too. Thank you for your advice!

I had the same problem for awhile. As Betty already asked- did it ever work out?
