Not really sure what to do...
I have a litter of 4 girls who are about 9 months old. Last night 2 started chasing each other, and one is biting the other one's back. (no blood in cage, but scabs on one). Mugi is probably the dominant one, and she seems to chase Mikasa, the runt. The other two seem to step in and chase Mugi off of the little one, but get on with both parties.
I can't leave them all together, but how do I split 4 when just 2 are fighting? Right now they are in a split cage with Mugi (dominant) one one side and the other 3 (including Mikasa the runt) on the other side.
I'm guessing I need to reintroduce Mugi to the group? Is that right?
I tried to put them in neutral territory, but Mikasa won't let Mugi anywhere near her- as soon as they get anywhere near, she legs it- so really, she's causing the problem now!

Mugi with a neutral gerbil, Mikasa with the other neutral gerbil. Then watch to see if both pairs get along. If not switch places with the neutral gerbils. Four gerbils aren't likely to get along in the long run but two pairs should do fine.

They were asleep next to each other on each side of the split, and when i went to put them in pairs, they were trying to get to each other- in a nice way that is. I lifted the split out slowly, and nothing happened, they just went about their business as per usual. Then Mio held Mugi down and groomed her throat- I guess she's in charge now.
Now they are all asleep in one bundle like normal. I don't get it! Maybe it was just a little spat? I will keep a close eye, and I won't leave them unattended overnight to see how it goes.

When a declanning is occurring they only fight occasionally to start with, sleeping together and getting along fine the rest of the time. That's how it works. The fact they're getting along now is deceptive. You don't know when the next fight will occur and how serious it will be. There could be injuries or death(s). For the safely of your gerbils it will be best to divide them into two groups of two.

Just thought I'd update...
I separated the group into 2 pairs, and everyone seems so much calmer than before. Mikasa is still a bit wary but she's settling in with Mio just fine.
So sad my little colony has broken up though!
