My little boy Stewie has been lethargic and off his food for the last 48hrs. He has been drinking but not since yesterday. Last night I got him out to check him over and found some blood on my hand - I couldn't find any obvious reasons for it so it's either coming from his bum or urinary tract. I also haven't witnessed him poop and he always poops on my when I handle him - up until now. He seemed to have perked up this morning but has gone back downhill and now he seems to be weak in his back left leg.
He is only 8 weeks old - I've had him one week. His brother Brian seems to be fine and as active as ever. I have a vets appointment this afternoon, but has anyone experienced anything like this?

No, but I'm sending you hugs. I get worried anytime my three boys sleep differently or aren't as active as usual, so I know how you feel. Good luck, Becky. I'll be anxious to hear what the vet says.

Thanks lizb, the vet isn't totally sure but is particularly alarmed that Stewie isn't eating. Not to mention the blood (which we discovered is from his bum).
Stewie has had an antibiotic injection and I have 7 days worth to give him at home.
Fingers crossed!

I'm pleased to say that Stewie is doing much better; he's eating and more active and the bleeding appears to have pretty well stopped as far as I can tell. Still got another 5 doses of antibiotics to get down him (which is proving to be difficult) so I hope that he will soon be back to his old self

glad Stewie is improving, you could try putting his antibiotics on a fave treat or two, try one with a drop to make sure he eats it up, of course the syringe is best but if he takes it on a treat, it will be less stressful.

Thanks catnut, unfortunately he's not interested in anything that has the medicine one. At the moment I am squirting it around d his mouth so he at least injests some cleaning it off.
Also, he has lost weight and I would like to build him up a bit. Does anyone have ideas on the best way to do this? He is eating, but not loads so often refuses treats (although he is back on the pumpkin seeds now).

oxbow gerbil food or bulk pine nuts, they are expensive but gerbils love them and you don't have to get much for one gerbil,20 grams or so-make sure they look ok though and don't seem stale or going soft. I also give slow oats-organic each day-afew a day in their food and large sunflower seeds without salt and not roasted.

Thanks catnut, I couldn't get oxbow but have sunflower seeds and got another food that is meant to be good. Unfortunately, Stewie has now developed diarrhoea. I mixed the new food with existing but have now removed it. I'd also put a mineral wheel in which he seemed rather fond of and have removed that too. He is eating and drinking, and seems fairly OK in himself apart from the diarrhoea. This started last night - should I just continue to keep an eye on him? He's already lost weight from the previous thing and when I weighed him he's lost another 5g since being weighed at the vets last week.

Thank you, I went back to the vet this evening and he suspects Tyzzers. Stewie has more antibiotics and is now separated from his brother Brian. He also has a powder for parasites just in case. He seems pretty OK though - eating and drinking but vet said he's dehydrated.
Fingers crossed he recovers.

poor Stewie, hope he can recover but know you are doing all you can for him, you should tell them at the pet store that you have a sick gerbil, too. Just make sure to hand feed him what he will eat, I find gerbils will eat when offered foods, maybe more when not feeling well and just eating on their own. fingers crossed.
Take care.

Well, I decided not to continue with the antibiotics for several reasons; it was really distressing for him as it was a fight to get them down him and I thought maybe they were making g his diarrhoea worse. It's been 3 days without and the diarrhoea has reduced and he has gained a little weight back I'm pretty sure he doesn't have tyzzers as he is eating, drinking and fairly active. Just one thing...on a couple of occasions a pale green jelly-like substance has been pooed out of his bum. Any ideas? Could it just be mucus of some sort?
