I adopted 2 elderly gerbils. Was told that they are 2 females. I believe I have a male and female. For I have seen them do the dance. She appears infertile. I have them in a 20g high aquarium.
Everytime after I change the litter the female starts attaching the male. After a few days it stops. The attachs are getting fiercer every time that I change the litter, which is weekly. I tried putting a divider in the tank but he got through it. By next month I will have a topper made to join 2 tanks. Will make it so I can separate them when needed.
Does anyone know why the quarreling is occurring?

Im not sure about the quarreling but do you think you could post a picture for someone to confirm that you have a male and a female, unless you are 100% certain of course

When you clean the cage, try putting at least a few handfuls of old bedding back in along with fresh. When you do a thorough cleaning and remove both gerbils' scents from the cage, it can make them uneasy and territorial until they have redeposited their scent. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Arwen (F) and Eowyn (F) 11/12/2011 - 20 gallon with 20 gallon topper Goldberry (F) 11/12/2011 - 20 gallon with 20 gallon topper

I left an inch of the old on the bottom.

I would put the old litter at one end of the cage or scatter it on top so they can recognize their scent,if they are getting worse, I would think about separating them before they hurt each other.

I will try putting the old litter at 1 end of the tank this Sat. I have an extra 10G tank but no screen top for it. I put her in there and she got out. Next month plan to put a topper on 20G high and 10G joining them together. Will plan it so that I can separate them.

Well the last 2xs I changed the litter I left what was under their house. No fighting ensued. The last time I put a bottle with some kitty litter for them to bathe in. I noticed Coffee (Black gerbil) sniffing Cream's (beige color gerbil) rear end. Then a Cream started attacking Coffee. I separated them and removed the litter. The next I put Coffee back in and there was no fighting.
So next bath will just be with river sand which I will bake in the oven.
