Yes, I read some advice (maybe from you) before I got the gerbils about having the food and water up top sooner rather than later, but I was too nervous of them not finding it. Perhaps I sabotaged things, but at least I'm comfortable knowing they have full access to their food and water.
And I'm pretty confident that the gerbils have not been in the topper while we've slept. I've scattered a bit of timothy hay on the floor of the topper and it is untouched, and as mentioned elsewhere they have never even set a paw on the ladder when we've watched them wandering around. I even tried putting a carrot slice mid way up the ladder and left it for several hours and it was untouched. I took it down and hand fed it to them and they gobbled it up.
Thus far they continue to be loving their time in the tank, pooping in their food bowl. lol At least they have a tendency to turn in such a way that they poop along one edge of the bowl, as opposed to all over their food.
