Okay, I got the wood and mesh to split tank my gerbs, need some tips and answers.
1. The holes are slightly large in the mesh, wide enough for them to have a nip. Does that matter? I can still fix it if it does.
2. I have a 10-11 week girl, would she be okay to split with a slightly older gerbil? (I don't know how old)?
3. I have a male also needed to try the split, I have no idea how old. I would imagine 8 months? Not sure. Would splitting him with another male be okay?
4. Any other tips welcome!
Thanks.

1. I don't really have a firm answer on that. . . if they can bite each other through it then that could be a problem, but they can also groom each other through it which could be good, plus if gerbil 1 tries to bite gerbil 2, gerbil 1 can just move away.
2. 10-11 weeks is still pretty young, so yeah, introducing to an adult female should be fine.
3. Whatever age he is it should be fine to introduce him to another male. If you introduce a pup then it will probably be even easier, but to an adult would be fine too.
Good luck and let us know if you have anymore questions!

1. I would suggest you do two layers of mesh so they can't get at each other, thats what I have done in the past and its worked great. 2. As a general rule of thumb, a younger gerbil is easy to introduce to an older gerbil, so they should be fine. 3. In general, males are actually easier than females to bond together. I'd say go for it I don't really have any other tips, but good luck

Just a few more: How long before switching the sides How long can I leave them in the tank. I don't have a lid yet, should I wait until I build one?

You mean how often do you switch sides? I would suggest three times a day.
I assume you mean how long do they need to be in the split? That depends. . . pretty much until you're seeing signs that make you feel like they are ready to go together. Yeah, you should wait until you have a lid. They can jump out or depending on how the divider is built may be able to climb that.

A lid is a necessity. As Crittercrazy stated, they could crawl over or jump out otherwise. I found switching more than 1-2 times a day stressed out my gerbils. So I will usually start off with switching bedding and leftover cardboard pieces...that way they get used to each other's smell first. Then I start switching 1x daily, then move it up to 2x daily and leave it at that until I feel they can bond. I continue to switch bedding regularly though. Sometimes they bond in a matter of days and sometimes it takes weeks. I had situations where they never bonded and just stayed in a permanent split. It's different from pair to pair.
