I have a 20 gallon JotCo tank topper. The other day my gerbil Bailey accidentally got sorta stick between a couple bars. I decided I needed to modify the mesh gauge. How small is small enough to not get their nails stuck but not have their feetsies stuck?

I just layer the bottom with newspaper. That gives them a protected surface for their feet, plus they enjoy digging and chewing at the paper. And once it gets soiled and shredded, replacing it with more newspaper is quick and cheap.

You mean the floors? Similar to Reeseturtles, I put down scrap cardboard cut (approximately) to the shape of the floor/shelves.
I wasn't sure how long the cardboard would last, but I've had the same pieces in my topper for 3 weeks now, and it still looks brand new. Eventually, when it gets soiled/chewed up, I'll just replace the pieces.

I get tissue and fold it so its a couple layers thick and that protects their feet. (You can see what i mean in my most recent Gerbilarium tour video of youtube sorry for the self promo????just tryna help) i do have to replace it like once or twice a day but thats okay. I want to get cardboard though like mothman does and layer it with tissue to make the cardboard last longer

With the gerbils I've kept as an adult I've had solid wooden platforms (I wouldn't like to have to run on wire!) and I used to cover them with cardboard ('man size' tissue boxes were great!) to absorb any wee. You could try covering the bars with card?
