So I thought I'd post some photos of my boys finished tank topper/shell
(I'll call it shell as I still would like to build up on more toys and things for inside the tank)
(Please be prepared for a story and lots of random pictures)
My recent trip back to the UK ended up paying off massively for my gerbils as my dad who is a carpenter joiner gave me some knock out blocks that I couldn't seem to find anywhere here in Norway :/ and my whole family getting involved to save all their toilet and kitchen rolls for me over the last few weeks lol! I ended up filling my suitcase with 43 toilet and kitchen rolls they all joked about how I would get stopped at the airport and having to explain my way out of why I was taking them abroad with me.
This is the topper which is from the Extra large Gerbilarium you can buy at P@H but obviously living in Norway I didn't buy mine from there (I do wish however that I still had my old one from past gerbils when I did live in the UK) the measurements of the barred topper is 66.5cm Length (26.3 inches) by 25.5cm Height (10.1 inches) by 36cm Depth (10.4 inches) I've used knock out blocks (at the front) and metal corner brackets (at the back and side to cover electrical wire gaps) to make sure the topper doesn't move but can be slid off at the long end to help me get into the tank to clean.
I have 2 rosewood mats covering the floor, a home made platform made from the bendy stick bridges, a bendy bridge swing platform, plastic hideaway pod hammock, reptile terracotta hideaway as a sand bath, bendy bridge as a bridge to both platforms, extra long bendy bridge as a ladder down to the tank, wheel, food bowl, water bottle ans now the P@H Christmas star in the topper.
I also have a hatch at the right end for access to the tank (old image before knock out blocks were put on so you can see the topper has slid slightly) I was so happy to find the same style handle to put on my hatch that is on the cupboard doors on the tank stand so it matches perfectly.
The measurements of the tank itself are 101cm Length (39.8 inches) by 50.5cm Height (22inches) by 40cm Depth (15.7inches)
Length view from inside the tank under the hatch:
Current toys in the tank are my home made fruit stick hanger, wooden hanger with bell they go mental for the bell sounds (in a good way), aquarium drift wood log, puzzle chew ball, whole toilet roll with tissues on it, cardboard tubes (some buried) wooden tunnel, thick trunk hide away (it's visible with a ceramic dish on top in the above picture but buried in this one) and 2 wooden tunnels also buried.
I also like to put in these types of treats every now and then but as I don't want them to live off treats I usually only hang it in there for an hour or two in the evenings when they are up and about at their most playful and then seal it in a food bag to keep it fresh for the next time.
Toy hauls while in the UK I got a couple of festive toys/treats from P@H from their Christmas range:
I really really wanted to bring back more but there was just not enough room for extra weight in my cabin case they have adorable wooden Christmas trees and things at the moment as well but oh well they will have to have more next year.
I also had ordered a few things from Amazon to be delivered to my dads house for free delivery.
I bought 2 of the rosewood mats as they were the perfect size to cover the floors of my toppers and have worked out brilliantly for them so far. Since I built my topper to have flat floors instead of bars they have taken to doing the odd poop upstairs and now with these mats I can just lift them out empty any poops into the bin and rinse it under the tap dry it off and pop it back into the tank. Also once they get old I can just buy new ones and they are safe to wash off cut up and use as chewing squares downstairs in the tank. The odd test nibble went on for the first day but now I think they have accepted it as flooring and no longer try to shred it up.
The bag 'o' chew nibble shapes I got I have threaded onto chain and use it as a hanging toy as I figured as they are quite small my boys would probably just bury them never to see the light of day again if I gave them to them separately.
I'm currently saving the owl for Christmas and have only given them one of the nut blocks which they have rolled around with but not yet got the nut out of after 2 days.
