UPDATE:
Jenny has now had her 4th followup visit to the vet and a new xray shows that the tumor is now slightly more reduced then the previous visit two weeks ago. She has lost about 2 grams of weight (not much to talk about and it might be the result of the tumor reduction)
However, we now have a new problem - Jenny loves having a dust bath, so much so that she literally goes "swimming" in it. Unfortunately, this has caused some dust to get into her left eye and has become caught under her eye lid. The vet has given us Gentamicin Sulfate (drops) to give her 3 times a day for 7 to 10 days. The eye is not infected, but we want to make sure it does not become infected.
We will be discontinuing giving her dust bathes - they were helping with the Menges problem and she loves it - but, we will just have to give her more of the anti itch medication and brush her more often (which she likes us to do very much).
Jenny next vet visit is in 3 weeks.

I just wanted to wish you luck and compliment you for your devotion and love for your little girl. You should be commended for you efforts to give her as much of a quality of life she deserves. Having just lost my boy Pepper to a inner ear infection that I didn't catch early enough and spread to his respiratory system and had to put him to sleep. 2 different Dr's visited and days of giving meds was heart breaking to have had this result. You and your family have gone through all this times 10, you deserve a great ending. I'm cheering for Jenny and your family. She is lucky to have such a wonderful family!

First, please accept our condolences for your lose of Pepper - May he RIP - I am know he was loved and new you loved him.
Thank you so much for your kind remarks - Jenny has now surpassed the 3 month mark and her next followup with the vet is on Thursday.
She has quite an appetite, so much so that we are worried about her weight gain, but we have been told by the vet to just keep letting her eat as much as she wants & when ever she want - and not to jinx it - a good appetite for a gerbil with cancer is very good.
I will post an update after her Thursday followup - Thanks again very much for your kind remarks and again so very sorry for your loss.

Thanks for your sympathy. I wish you and Jenny all the love and happiness you deserve. I am waiting for my local breeder to pick my next family members. He said if the mating took, they should be born sometime next week. I will be able to bring them home in 7 weeks. It's hard waiting, but I don't want to get them from a pet store again. I've had too many problems from that source. You have been an inspiration on Gerbil care. Best.

............... We lost Jenny a little while ago - she went peacefully, we both took turns hugging and talking to her.
This morning, when we went to give her her medicine she did not seem quite right and she felt sort of cool. But, we decided to go ahead and do everything as normally as possible. When we put her into the playpen she seemed very tired and wobley, we spent two hours taking turns holding her we put her down into the playpen several times the second to the last time she passed several extremely large fecal pellets then several more when holding her. We put her into the playpen again and suddenly she seemed quite normal and warmer. She did a little climbing and scampering but became very tired very fast. We then put her back into her tank (home).
This evening, we decided to put her back into the playpen for a short time without any medicines, she did a few playful things and then went back to her bed. I checked on her several times during the evening and she was fast asleep. She started to stir around 12:MN, I tried to give her a treat, she did take it but then drooped it. I started to pet her and she seemed to want more attention so I piked her up. She felt cool to me and her breathing seemed erratic. I woke up rs and we both sat we her as above.
Although we knew this day would come, we never expected Jenny to be able to put up such a courage's fight against all odds, for this length of time.
We want to give all of you our many thanks for all of your support which played a big part in our efforts.
As Jenny was the last of our gerbils - it makes losing her that much more difficult, we will greatly miss her and will always remember her - RIP Sweetie Girl.
rs says to add that everyone on the forum will understand that each gerbil is a unique individual
We are planing to take a break for a while, and we want to thank you all again for all of your support.

soo sorry to hear about Jenny. You did all you could for her and I know she would thank you and did in her own way. Take it easy on yourself and you gave her the best life possible. Time will help, I lost my Shelby in December and it was very hard at first and I miss her a lot but now know I gave her the best life I could. Take care, Tammy.

The vet has found (preliminary findings) that the tumor was unlikely to be the cause of death - and the vet is not sure what the cause was. A necropsy will be done, with results in about a week - which I will post.
