I have two gerbil brothers, who look exactly the same. Their personalities are different, but still I was surprised that they have different preferences in food. One likes celery and the little bean from inside a fresh string bean. The other won't have anything to do with those items. They both like cucumber, broccoli and apple. I don't often give these treats, but they definitely like what they like. This says something to me about people who think animals don't have feelings like people. Has anyone else noticed this with their gerbils?

Yes- my different gerbils like different foods. Still, I must say, as far as the topic of whether or not animals have feelings like humans, I'd say there's a big difference between an animal having food preferences like we do and an animal having the emotions we do. Not to say I do or don't think they do. Just a thought.

I agree with Crittercrazy that emotions and food preferences aren't necessarily linked, but I would like to believe that my pets feel something positive toward me, Daisy. So... everyone's right.

I just meant to say that each is unique and many people can't see this in non-human animals. I don't know what they feel towards me, although they definitely are comfortable with me and identify me with food.
