Do gerbils use their back feet to clean their eyes? I would expect them to use their front paws for this, but for the last couple weeks Jean Luc has been keeping his left eye closed most of the time. I don't see any goo or redness, really, but I thought if he cant rub his eyes he might be uncomfortable or something? I mainly ask about the back legs because his left back leg is the one that broke and I know it doesnt have the same reach it used to. I did try wiping his eye off with a damp paper towel once but it didn't seem to help. any ideas?

gerbils usually use their front paws to clean their faces. Does it seem swollen, red or bothering him? It could just be stuck (eyelid) as that can happen when gerbils get older.

it isn't red or swollen at all and when it is open it looks entirely normal. i didn't know stuck eyelid was something that happens with age - thank you!
