I think plastic cages are safe if they are shaped so that nothing sticks out and the gerbils cannot get there teeth around anything. When I had my two gerbils, I kept them in a plastic cage and never had a problem until I had io take the water bottle out to move it, wich left a hole in the cage. It was enough room for the gerbil to fit his teeth around and chew a hole through.

Both my gerbils live in plastic cages. As in Pets at Home gerbilariums. Theres nothing they can chew and its very thick so its okay

i think it depends on the cage at hand if its something like a critter trail then its not acceptable but something like a bin or a pets at home gerbilarium would be ok
