How many of you have gerbils who will actually eat Oxbow healthy handfuls? I am reluctant to try it after past failures with Oxbow with hamsters. However with a seed mix and their burying everything I just cant tell when they are done and if they are selective feeding.
I got them a bin feeder and it would work perfect with Oxbow healthy handfuls if I could transition them.

can I ask a question about oxbow- how long does it keep when in the original Ziploc bag? How can I tell when it is stale? should I put it in the freezer to keep longer?, as I only use acouple for each gerbil each day, it lasts quite long/ Thanks.

I always put things in the freezer in a Ziploc bag ... That said it will keep 6 months before it begins losing nutritional value.

My boys were eating it when I got them and they continue to. I like it because they can't pick out the tidbits they like best and it's clear how much they are eating. I give them Carnival tidbits as treats sometimes, as well as fresh fruit or vegetables in small amounts of course.

I put two food dishes in my gerbils cage - one with oxbow and one with tropical carnival. They seem to prefer the oxbow as its always gone first, so now I just sprinkle the tropical carnival in their bedding for them to forage.

My three eat it. If I feed it with a seed mix (TC) they ignore it, but I feed TC in the morning and Oxbow in the evening and they eat it with gusto.

When we got our gerbils, they were accustomed to eating Oxbow, and ate it up with no issues.
For better or worse, I chose to transition them to a mix of Tropical Carnival and Oxbow, thinking it would be a moe 'interesting' food selection for them.
Almost immediately they stopped eating the Oxbow. I still mix in some Oxbow with the TC, but the Oxbow is typically their last choice, and they only seem to eat it when they have little else available.

What I ended up doing is I feed them their seed in the morning and they have an auto feeder for the oxbow so its always available.
