I am getting my gerbil boys a 29 gallon with a custom topper thats 30x12x18. I was wondering for future reference how many this set up could comfortably house. The topper does have a shelf, will have a bin feeder, 2 wheels, 2 water bottles, a " snack" dish, and their sand dish when I put it in.

Three or four, I'd say. However, you could always just give a pair a nice big home! There doesn't seem to be anything backing up the "too much space causes fighting" thing, so ignore that.

Turns out the 29 gallon plus my topper would be too tall, so I just got another 20 long. Boo. But it will be nicer for them when the topper gets here anyway, since the bottom will be just for burrowing and I collected a bunch of cardboard

Leaving the whole tank for burrowing is definitely a plus of toppers

So are - not being able to bury the food bowl - not being able to bury the wheel - and not burying the water bottle causing it to leak all over lol
What do most people use to cover the mesh flooring in their toppers? I was thinking of using fleece linings and zip tying them in place

Most people use cardboard and just replace it when it gets yucky. Some use grass matts or even bendy bridges. I use cardboard and then a couple of tiles. My girls only go potty and poo on the tiles or in their sandbath so it makes for easy clean up. I would seriously rethink the fleece. There is a chance they will chew it and it would not be good for them to eat/chew or get their paws stuck in. I've heard for the most part to stay away from any fiber material. Of course you could just use fleece in a supervised playpen only.

I have used fleece for years for rats, rats chew as well, Fleece has no threads making it safer than any other fabric.
I dont think Cardboard is possible for me, and Those little mat things would stink in no time as well as they would be chewing what they pee on.

I am just saying its not a fabric with fibers ...
I need something flexible so it fits through the door.
