I bought one gerbil about a month ago a couple weeks after having him I bought a friend. I did the split cage for 2 weeks they started fighting after smelling each other for a minute. I don't know what to do. Will they never get along since they already met and fought? What should I do? I really want them to get along. I see these videos of vanilla extract and they get along immediately or I see the split cage and they get along when they take it out. But my gerbils don't. Any advice?

How old are they? Gerbils often get harder to introduce as they get older but usually if you persist with the split cage it will work, sometimes it takes a matter of days and sometimes it takes months it just depends on the gerbils you have although some gerbils just don't get on. *I have never tried the vanilla extract method but i have found split caging usually works

It's not the length of time you do the split cage for - the split is just a means to getting them used to each others' scent on both sides of the wire.
So if you just did the split for 2 weeks regardless of how the gerbils reacted, then you have a good chance of doing it again and it being successful.
Often gerbils take a bit longer to settle in to the scent of another gerbil for whatever reason, so 2 weeks is fast in my experience. I would go back to the split with them and watch out for their behaviour changes and forget about counting days; there is no exact number so at least you know that they should eventually get together, so a slow split is still a good thing in my opinion.
I've not heard of the vanilla extract mix either, but there are people who try bonding gerbils in a variety of different ways - so as long as you just follow one way and follow it properly - you should get the result you want.
Good Luck.
